Triple P Seminar # 1 - The Power of Positive Parenting

Join Us for Talking Tuesdays at Westmount Collegiate Institute - Building a Supportive Parent Community

 Dear Westmount Collegiate Institute Parents,

As we all navigate the journey of parenting teenagers and school life, we understand the challenges and joys that come with it. That's why we are excited to introduce Talking Tuesdays, a monthly initiative hosted by the Westmount Collegiate Institute Parent Council.

Event Details:

·         What: Talking Tuesdays

·         When: First Tuesday of the month: Starting February 6, 2024

·         Time: 7:30pm to 8:30pm

·         Location: WCI Library

Why Talking Tuesdays? Parenting is a shared journey, and it truly does take a village to raise well-grounded kids. Talking Tuesdays is an opportunity for us, as parents, to come together in a casual and non-judgmental setting. It's a safe space where we can connect, share our concerns, support one another, and gain valuable insights into the unique challenges of parenting teens and the high school years.

What to Expect:

  • Community Connection: Build connections with fellow parents who share similar experiences.
  • Support: Receive and provide support as we navigate the ups and downs of kids at school.
  • Insightful Conversations: Gain valuable insights and share your own experiences.

Your presence and participation are invaluable to the success of this initiative. We look forward to seeing you at Talking Tuesdays and building a stronger, connected Westmount Collegiate Institute parent community.

Theme for February 6:

Parenting Teens: What type of parent are you?

An insightful journey and discussion about our parenting styles and how to talk “teenager”.

AN OPPORTUNITY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO

STEAM Design

STEAM-D is an experiential learning program for grades 10-12 students with an interest in health sciences. In this program, learners get to connect with a diverse group of university students, researchers and healthcare professionals through a series of interactive workshops to gain exposure to a variety of academic and career pathways available within the health sciences field. The learners also work collaboratively on a research project using design thinking to generate innovative solutions to existing healthcare systems issues. The students earn a grade 12 science credit (i.e., SNC4M) that can be used towards their college and university applications and receive a stipend of $1600 upon completing the program.

The program is designed with an equity focus for groups that are underrepresented in health sciences (i.e., Black, Indigenous, Filipino, Latin American, racialized, and/or from any background experiencing socio-economic barriers). Priority is given to students from underserved schools and neighborhoods.

The next program will run from July 2 – 26, 2024, Mon-Fri between 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM at the University of Toronto, St. George Campus (Downtown Toronto).

Applications will remain open until March 31, 2024. Those selected for interviews will be contacted via email between mid-March and mid-April. Interviews will be taking place in April. Please see attached brochure and link below to apply.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM OUAC.

GUIDANCE UPDATES - January 16

APPLICATION DEADLINE TO APPLY TO UNIVERISTY  EXTENDED - DUE TODAY.

PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM OUAC.

Hello,

We experienced a 2-hour disruption in access to our website and applications last night (January 15). The OUAC's infrastructure is very robust and has always been able to handle the volume of applicants accessing our applications, even on deadline days. An inordinate and unusual volume of traffic (beyond what we would expect from applicants) was blocked by security filters set by our internet service provider, so no traffic was reaching our servers. Access was restored at just before 9 pm.

This is the first time we have experienced this specific type of outage in all our years of operation. We will work with our service provider in the coming weeks to try to determine the cause and source of the issue.

We understand and apologize for the immense frustration and anxiety this has caused our applicants and have decided to extend the Undergraduate application deadline for Ontario high school students until 11:59 pm tonight, January 16, 2024. Undergraduate applicants have always been able to submit applications after the deadline but may find some programs closed. This will not change, but we have asked the universities not to close any programs until tonight's new deadline.

Please advise your students to submit their applications today (January 16) if they were not able to yesterday.
