The Horatio Alger Association of Canada seeks to assist students who have demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue a post-secondary education, and a desire to contribute to society.


To be considered for the Horatio Alger Canadian Scholarship, applicants must:

·       Be a current Grade 11 student, with plans to enter university 

        in the fall of 2025

·       Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a

        bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university

·       Demonstrate critical financial need ($65,000 or less net

        income per family is required)

·       Be involved in extracurricular and community activities

·       Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity

·       Maintain a minimum grade percentage of 70

·       Be Canadian citizens

·       Attend high school and reside in Canada

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE GRADUATION CEREMONY

FOR GRADE 12 PARENTS/GUARDIANS AND STUDENTS

 

Please note that the deadline to pay for graduation is fast approaching. 

 

The deadline is MARCH 21.

 

If you would like to attend the Graduation Ceremony, please pay your grad fee of $75 through SchoolCash online.

 

This fee provides all Grade 12 students with their very own cap, gown and stole, which are worn to the graduation ceremony.  The cap, gown and stole can be kept as a keepsake of this major milestone.  In addition, the fee helps to defray the cost of the graduation ceremony.  Please select the appropriate sized gown (size options found on SchoolCash).  Be sure to measure your height from head to toe. 

 

**If you are not sure whether or not you paid your fee, please log into SchoolCash and check under ‘Payment History’.

 

All students who pay the graduation fee will receive 2 guest tickets.  These tickets are numbered and assigned to the student who paid the fee.  Guest tickets are non-transferable.  Students who pay the fee do not need a ticket to attend the ceremony.

 

Date of Graduation:  June 27

Venue:  Paradise Banquet Hall

Arrival for Students:  5:45pm

Ceremony Start Time: 6:30pm

STUDY AND GO ABROAD FAIR

On Sunday, March 3rd, your students can meet us at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, North Building, for the Study and Go Abroad / SchoolFinder Fair, where they'll have the chance to connect with 75+ top colleges and universities from Canada and around the world.

Whether they're interested in studying in Canada or abroad (or aren't sure yet), this is a great opportunity to start planning for their undergraduate-level studies.  


The fair is free of charge, and all attendees are entered into a Grand Draw to win some great prizes, including a free return flight to anywhere in the world on Air Canada, and a $5,000 cash prize.

Seminars are held throughout the day starting at 12 noon, with the feature seminar on how to access Scholarships - check the full schedule here

We continue to support Indigenous students and work to provide a curriculum that facilitates learning about contemporary and traditional First Nation, Métis, and Inuit cultures, histories and perspectives among all students. To continue supporting self-identified students, the First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Ancestry Self-Identification brochure was updated in 2022:

Youth Opportunity - Summer Company Program

The City of Vaughan is once again offering the Summer Company program, in association with the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, to prepare young entrepreneurs with a comprehensive portfolio of tools, skills, connections and resources required to succeed in business. Applications for this year’s Summer Company program are now open at vaughanbusiness.ca/Summer-Company and will close on Monday, April 15.

·         Beginning June 5, Ontario high school students can search for possible openings at Ontario universities on the OUAC website.

·         The OUInfo website has been updated for 2023-2024 and includes the following new sections:

o    University Student Transition Resources

o    Extenuating Circumstances

o    Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

The Study and Go Abroad and SchoolFinder Fairs are coming together to offer you even more study options. Check out the Canadian pavilion for local and out-of-province universities and colleges. Explore the International pavilion to meet with institutions from around the world, including the UK, US, Australia, Switzerland, France, Belgium etc. Don’t forget to visit the Travel Zone for work abroad, internships, immersive language travel and volunteering.

YRDSB SUMMER PATHWAY PROGRAMS

Continuing Education in collaboration with Curriculum & Instruction Services is offering several Pathways program opportunities this summer for students to earn 1-2 credits.  

Grade 12 students requiring Co-op credits to graduate will be given priority in 1 and 2 Credit Co-op programs. 

 

The SHSM 2 Credit Co-op: Mackenzie Health/Cortellucci Hospital and Scarborough Health Network Hospital is for Health and Wellness and Business SHSM students only with a priority given to Grade 12 students who were unable to fit Co-op into the regular school day program.  www.yrdsb.ca/summer-pathway

REMINDER - OPTING OUT OF THE TWO REQUIRED ONLINE LEARNING CREDITS

What is the Online Learning Graduation Requirement?

All students must earn at least two online learning credits as part of the requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)unless they have opted out or been exempted.

 

How do I opt out?

1.     Opt out through myBlueprint during Course Selection time.

2.     Pick up a paper copy of the opt out form from the guidance office, fill it in, and return it to the guidance secretary, Ms. Han.

Our next WCI School Council Meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 21st.

Your voice is really important so that we can provide experiences through our School Council that are responsive to your interests and support the needs of our students.  We really hope that you can join us online or in person on February 21st.

Student Trustee Elections

Each year, students in Grades 5-12 have the opportunity to vote for the two student trustees who will represent their voice across York Region District School Board. Voting takes place between February 20-22, 2023.

You can learn more about the final four candidates and watch an all-candidates panel discussion at www.yrdsb.ca/studenttrustees. This is an excellent opportunity to hear directly from each candidate and their views and thoughts on issues that concern all YRDSB students. All students in grades 5-12 are encouraged to watch. 

Information on how to vote will be shared with all eligible students in your GAPPS email account when voting opens February 20th.

John grew up playing hockey on Long Island. Where he won back to back High School All-Star M.V.P. awards. After High School John went to Suny Broome for two years to play in NJCAA. Shortly afterwards he would transfer to Suny Cortland to play. From there John got invited to Pro Hockey UHL Danbury Trashers Camp. Few years later John ended up playing Pro hockey in AAHL for Evansville Ice Men and Battle Creek Revolution. Recently John came out of retirement to play in an FHL game for Delaware Thunder. John also has coached as well. Where he helped Eastwood Prep school Varsity Program earn their first ever wins and JV team to back to back undefeated season. Over the past few years John has gotten certifications in Hockey Scouting, GM, and Analytics. Where he has become a PHPA certified agent helping players both Junior and Pro live their dreams.
